MV Blazin Pistol

(Photo at just a few minutes old)

Red Dun Tobiano colt (IQPA/PtHA/APPR)
SS Flashin' My Badge (IQPA/PtHA/APPR) x My Gal Roxie (IQPA/AQPA)

We've been waiting impatiently for this colt since before Roxie was bred because we were so sure she and Bandit would throw something special, and we're very happy with the results. Early the morning of June 14th, Roxie had this gorgeous little guy just as the sun was coming up. We were kind of hoping for a grulla, but we'll sure settle for a red dun as nice as this one.

(Pistol standing for the first time.)

Pistol seems to have been pretty cramped before he was born and the tendons were a bit tight in his front legs, but with exercise they relaxed and straightened out. He's a really leggy little guy compared to the size of his parents, and most of the time a newborn foal with that sort of problem is all sorted out in a week or two. The tendons weren't short enough to give him any problems getting around, so we just let nature do her job and he shaped right up.

(Pistol taking his first walk around the pen with Roxie.)

Pistol's taking after his mother as far as his dun striping goes with a really prominent lineback and shoulder bars and even faint stripes on his legs, but the rest of his color is Bandit all the way. Roxie doesn't have so much as a star, but Pistol has a nice blaze, four stockings, and fairly decent tobiano patterning. We're really pleased with the color Bandit is putting on his foals out of our solid mares, and looking forward to a lot more foals like Pistol, Kirby, and Sky in the future.

(Photo taken at about 10 hours old. Look at that lineback!)

The photos here were all taken within the first day of Pistol's life, so we understandably haven't had a lot of time to get to know him yet. We have handled him and he's been a sweetheart so far, so we expect him to have the same friendly, people-loving personality his parents have. We expect this little guy to shape up much the same as Sky and be a spectacular family pony that can show on the weekends and do well in either open or Pinto shows.

We'll update this page with more information about him as we get to know Pistol better!

Update:

More pictures of Pistol! He's really shaping up nicely as he grows and sheds off his foal coat. Our summer has been amazingly busy so we haven't had time to halter break him yet, but he's been a doll whenever we needed to handle him, just like his parents.

(August 12, in the middle of shedding his foal coat. He's just two months old here!)

This little guy has tons of potential as a show or performance pony, or even just as some lucky child's best friend. He has the build and athletic ability to do just about any discipline, and the kind of markings that ought to really catch a judge's eye in the halter ring. He's showing more dun factor as he sheds off his foal coat, so we expect striping to show up on his knees and hocks any time now to go with the lineback, shoulder barring, and face shadows he's had since birth.

Update Two:

We finally had time to halter break Pistol, just in time for him to go to his new home! These photos are of his first time in a halter. He didn't give us a bit of trouble, and we're thrilled with how well he has turned out both mentally and physically. Pistol's a real sweetheart of a pony and he was a joy to work with!

His new owner is our friend Reba Callahan of Doyline, LA. She plans to fit him out and get him in the show ring with a goal of showing at the 2008 PtHA World Show, and we wish her and her granddaughter Amy the best of luck with him!
